Northfield shoppers Knit and Natter to help the pitter patter of tiny feet

The first-ever Knit and Natter morning at Birmingham’s Northfield Shopping Centre proved a huge success this week, after shoppers turned up in their droves in support of Birmingham Women’s.

The centre recently announced Birmingham Women’s Tiny Babies Big Appeal as it’s charity of the year and encouraged knitters of all abilities from across the region to visit Costa Coffee and get knitting for newborns, with all of the wonderful creations being taken to the charity-supported antenatal clinic at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.

Eileen Rock, Fundraising Manager at Birmingham Women’s NHS Foundation Trust, said she was thrilled with the number of items knitted. “This was a great first Knit and Natter morning,” said Eileen. “We had all manner of clothing created that is set to go down a treat with new parents and staff at the hospital.

“We have so many mums and newborns coming into the unit on a daily basis and it’s vital that we’ve got warm clothes to keep them wrapped up. I’d like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who took part in the Knit and Natter morning and to Adam and the team at Northfield for organising. We’re looking forward to continuing the events with them throughout the year.”

Northfield Centre Manager, Adam Meade, said he was delighted to play host to the event and with the turnout from shoppers. “We had a great response for our first Knit and Natter morning,” said Adam. “After recently teaming up with Birmingham Women’s Hospital’s Tiny Babies Big Appeal as our chosen charity of the year, we wanted to get the year of fundraising with them off to a great start.

“The team at Costa Coffee were kind enough to be able to give us space to host the event and provided all of the brilliant knitters with a free first drink and then half price refreshments for the rest of the morning. The turnout was fantastic and we’ve now got a number of items that will be able to keep the little ones warm.”

The Knit and Natter morning at Northfield Shopping Centre will take place on the last Tuesday of each month with the event returning on 28 March. Held in Costa Coffee, for every volunteer their first drink is free and then 50% off any further drinks.
